What Can Dogs Not Eat?

You can’t resist those puppy dogs’ eyes, can you? You snacking and they come up and glare at you just wanting a taste of whatever it is you are snacking on. But do you know there are many human foods that can dogs not eat?

You can give them SOME human foods, but it depends on what it is and what's in it. If it contains the sweetener xylitol, it can cause your dog some real problems. In fact, there’s a lot of people’s food your dog should never eat. And, it’s not just because of weight. Some foods are downright dangerous for dogs -- and some of these common foods may surprise you.

What can dogs not eat?

Alcoholic beverages

Alcoholic Beverages

Of course, we don’t want to have to give our 4-legged friends a breathalyzer test, so be sure they don’t consume any type of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol has the same effect on a dog’s liver and brain that it has on people. They are very harmful to them

Apple Seeds

Apple Seeds

Sharing your apple with your dog is fine but be sure they don’t get any seeds. Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide which is released when they're broken or chewed.

Avocados

Avocados

Avocados are very good for us humans but are very toxic for animals. Having an avocado will cause them to vomit and have diarrhea.

Cherry pits

Cherry Pits

Cherries are safe for your dog, but it is essential that you make sure there is no pit or stem. Cherry pits are poisonous and potentially lethal if consumed in high enough quantities. Cherry pits can also get lodged in a dog’s digestive tract and cause intestinal blockages.

Candy or Gum

Any candy or gum particularly chocolate—which is toxic to dogs, cats, and ferrets—and any candy containing the toxic sweetener Xylitol). Chocolate contains methylxanthines (specifically caffeine and theobromine), which dogs are far more sensitive to than people.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and tea contain caffeine and can be harmful to your pet.

Garlic or Onion

Garlic or Onion

Got a leftover bone from your steak and you want to share it with your friend? You need to make sure it doesn’t have any garlic on it! garlic and other members of the allium family, including onions, contain thiosulfate, which is toxic to dogs.

Grapes or Raisins

Grapes

Grapes can cause kidney failure, so be sure your dog doesn’t get any grapes or raisins. It is important to know what fruits can dogs eat since some fruits can be harmful to our dogs.

Tomato leaves and stems (green parts)

Tomato Leaves and Stem

The leaves, stems, and young, green tomatoes contain higher amounts of solanine than ripe fruit, which means that ripe tomatoes are generally safe to feed to dogs.

Walnuts

Walnuts

Apart from the risk of intestinal obstruction and stomach irritation, walnuts can be toxic to dogs.

In addition, to the foods above, bones can also be harmful when consumed by your dog. Cooked bones are more likely to break and form into shards, increasing the risk of puncturing your pet's internal organs. It may still be beneficial for your dog to eat some bones. Be mindful of which kind of bone you give them if you give them. Your dog should only chew on soft bones.

If you think that your dog, cat, or any pet, has consumed any of the above it is a good idea to call your vet right away. They can help you get them the help they need. Take a few extra seconds to make sure whatever you leave on the counter or table is far enough back so that our furry friends can’t reach it.

As a fur parent, we want what's best for our pets and you may look for ways on how to keep your pet healthy. You may do some research to know what's best for them and consult your vet before changing your pet's diet or supplements.
